Com a colonização das Américas, no século XVI foi levado para a Europa, inicialmente para a Espanha e Itália, países nos quais se adaptou facilmente devido ao clima, sendo que atualmente é cultivado por todo o mundo.
O consumo de tomate em parte deve-se a grande quantidade de substâncias benéficas como licopeno, caroteno e vitaminas. Este gênero, além de ser amplamente distribuído no Brasil, possui uma diversidade de espécies muito grande e o manejo químico destes insetos geralmente é dificultado em função das características de desenvolvimento, que dificulta a ação dos produtos, além de apresentar resistência a diversos grupos químicos de inseticidas.
O ácaro predador, S. scimitus, possui capacidade de predação das fases que ocorrem no solo, pré-pupa e pupa. Visando um controle ainda mais eficiente desta praga nas demais fases de desenvolvimento, a liberação do percevejo Orius insidiosus também é uma ferramenta muito útil para reduzir o nível populacional destes insetos.

Contudo, para avaliar e comparar as formas de manejo de pragas e doenças na cultura do tomateiro, o projeto MIP EXPERIENCE, possui em sua estrutura a produção de tomate em três formas de manejo: Convencional, onde todo o manejo é desenvolvido de acordo com as recomendações e aplicações pelos produtores. Nos tratamentos com manejo biológico e integrado, a liberação do percevejo O. insidiosus (Insidiomip) foi realizada de acordo com as recomendações enquanto o ácaro predador S. scimitus (Stratiomip) foi liberado de forma experimental para o controle preventivo das fases de pré-pupa e pupa. Os resultados são acompanhados semanalmente através de armadilhas de monitoramento de pragas, com intuito de verificar a eficiência dos produtos biológicos, assim como as possíveis diferenças entre as três formas de manejo da cultura.
